Residential Roll-Off Dumpster Rental Questions Answered

Posted on: 31 October 2018

Massive in size and completely portable, roll-off dumpsters are an excellent resource if you have a major cleanup job to do in a residential home. However, renting a dumpster always comes with some questions. Here are a few things you likely want to know.

Can you place large appliances in your dumpster?

In general, it is not a good idea to place large appliances in a dumpster even if the dumpster will technically hold the item just fine. The massive size of the item can make the dumpster harder to load and transport because it changes its weight distribution. If you do have an appliance to throw out, it is best that you take it to a scrap metal recycling center. If you must place the appliance in your dumpster, break it down into pieces first if possible. For example, a washing machine can be unassembled into multiple parts and the main outer shell can be bent and folded to a smaller stature.

Is it okay if you move the dumpster after it is delivered?

If you have the dumpster placed in one location and later discover it would serve you better somewhere else, it is best to contact the owner of the dumpster to move it. The dumpster is put specifically in a place where it is easy to retrieve and where it will stay stable. If you move it, it could cause problems during retrieval. Plus, the dumpster itself can be exceptionally heavy, so you could hurt yourself or cause damage to your property by moving it.

Can you put a lock on the dumpster lid?

Most places will have no problems with you placing a lock on the dumpster lid if you need it secure. Just make sure the lock is removed on the day the dumpster is scheduled to be picked up from your property.

Should you put a no-dumping sign on the dumpster?

If you live in an urban area, people may see the dumpster as an open opportunity to discard their trash, which you definitely don't want. If the dumpster does not already have a sign on it that states it is just for your, it is a good idea to pick up a no-dumping sign and tape it to the dumpster, especially if it will be in an open area. This is another good reason to keep your dumpster locked.
