Tips And Strategies For Managing Your Business's Printer Ink Usage

Posted on: 17 October 2018

Businesses that utilize printers may have large demands for ink cartridges. These cartridges can be expensive, but there may not be a way for you to reduce your printing needs. Luckily, there may be ways to help lower ink costs by reducing waste.

Ensure Compatibility When Changing Ink Brands

In order to take advantage of good deals and other buying opportunities, you may need to change brands of ink. Prior to changing the type of ink that you are using in your printers, you must take steps to ensure compatibility between the cartridges and the printer before ordering bulk amounts of the ink. In addition to checking the technical specifications of the cartridges, you may want to order a sample first to ensure that the cartridges will provide the print quality that you require.

Store The Ink Cartridges In Cool Locations

Storing ink cartridges in areas where the temperature can get warm may allow the cartridges to degrade. This occurs because the high temperatures can cause clogs to form, the ink to separate and discoloration. The temperature tolerance for the cartridges will depend on their design. Unfortunately, some individuals will fail to consider the placement of radiators or heating vents, which can lead to the ink cartridges being exposed to warm temperatures throughout the winter.

Clean The Printer When Changing The Cartridges

When it comes time to change the ink cartridges, a few minutes should be taken to wipe away any ink or dust that may have gathered on the cartridge holder and the printheads. Using a damp cloth will help to lift out these substances, but you should wait a few minutes to allow it to dry before installing the new print cartridges.

Shake The Cartridges If They Have Not Been Used In Some Time

If it has been several days or weeks since you last used the printer, there is a chance that some ink may dry in the cartridge near the printhead. This can inhibit the transfer of ink to the paper. Vigorously shaking the cartridges can help to break up these clogs so that the ink can flow freely. If this fails, slightly wetting the printhead may help to dissolve any dried ink that has formed. To help avoid this problem in the future, it can be advisable to print a test page at least once a week. Test prints will utilize all of the cartridges so that this issue can be avoided in all of the cartridges. Printing an image that is not this test document may inadvertently fail to use all of the colors, which can still expose the printer to this particular problem.
